We Tested Launch Monitors So You Don't Waste $400
Budget launch monitors promise simulator-grade data at a fraction of the price. Some of that is true. Some of it depends entirely on which numbers you actually care about — and most buyers don't find out which is which until after the return window closes.
What we compared against
We ran the same set of clubs — driver, 7-iron, and pitching wedge — through three consumer-priced launch monitors and one professional-grade simulator used at a local indoor facility, across two range sessions, to see how far the budget data actually diverged.
Ball speed and distance: mostly reliable
This was the pleasant surprise. Across all three budget devices, ball speed and carry distance stayed within a reasonably tight margin of the professional simulator — typically within 3-5 yards on full swings. If distance and ball speed are your primary interest, budget devices are largely trustworthy.
Spin rate: the number to be skeptical of
Spin rate accuracy was where budget devices consistently struggled, particularly on shots with steep descent angles like wedges. Two of the three devices we tested showed spin rate deviations of 800-1200 RPM compared to the simulator — enough to meaningfully change club recommendation software's suggestions if you're using the data to make equipment decisions.
Indoor vs. outdoor consistency
Camera-based devices performed noticeably better in consistent, even lighting — meaning indoor nets or covered driving ranges produced more reliable numbers than harsh midday outdoor sun, where two devices showed intermittent read failures on lower, faster shots.
Bottom line
If you want a general sense of distance and ball speed to track improvement over time, a budget launch monitor is a reasonable investment. If you're relying on spin rate data to make specific equipment-fitting decisions, that's where the accuracy gap becomes a real limitation worth knowing about before you buy.
